Lessons From the Valley: Part 2

This series of articles chronicles the lessons that I learnt or which were reinforced as my beloved wife, Sophany battled cancer, and then went home to be with the Lord in October, 2020. But these lessons can also be applied to your life, with whatever trials you may go through.

The title ‘Lessons from the Valley’ is taken from Psalm 23:4: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Philippians 1:21

Introduction:

If there is 1 verse which really summed up my dear wife’s attitude, it is the one quoted above (Phil. 1:21). This was especially the situation, in the 9 months from the time of her Lung Cancer diagnosis at the beginning of 2020, till she passed into the direct presence of the Lord on Oct 11th, 2020. The whole meainng and purpose of life, is to be at peace with God, through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Our lives are to be lived for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31), loving, following and obeying Him, according to the Word of God, the Bible. When we are at peace with Him, death holds no fear or dread. Rather, for a true Christian, it is something to be embraced and even anticipated, as a believer goes directly into the presence of the Lord at the point of death, where there is no more suffering, pain, evil or sickness (see Revelation 21:3-4). This is what is meant that “to die is gain” (Phil 1:21). Thankfully, this was the situation with Sophany. And many times last year, one of the things she said to me was, “We will be reunited again in the future in Heaven!” What a great comfort that is – knowing that death is not the end for a believer, BUT is the beginning of eternity in the joyous, glorious presence of the Lord, and with all other believers.

What about YOU?:

The real question is: WHAT ABOUT YOU? Are you truly at peace with Jesus Christ? Do you know for sure that you are going to go to Heaven when you one day inevitably die, and not to Hell? What would happen to you if you died today? (Btw there is a less than 1% chance you will die of Covid-19, BUT a 100% chance that you WILL die of something). If the thought of death invokes fear or dread within you, or it is something you avoid wanting to think about at all, or you are religious, but aren’t 100% sure what’s going to happen to you at death, then those are sure indicators, that you aren’t truly reconciled with God, through Jesus Christ.

So how do you know how to be truly at peace with God? The Bible gives us all the answers we need. No one is good enough or ‘religious enough’ to go to Heaven. Why? Because we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Sin doesn’t just include outward actions, but also sinful thoughts such as anger, lust, unforgiveness and coveting. Just one sin deserves God’s judgment (e.g. James 2:10), as He is perfectly holy, just and righteous. No one can earn their way to Heaven. And the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). That is, not just physical death, but eternal death – to be in Hell forever. BUT, the good news (‘gospel’) is that God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to the Earth about 2000 years ago. He lived a perfectly sinless life, and died on the Cross – He died to take the punishment for our sins, and rose from the dead on the 3rd day, and is alive now!! The Bible says that He is the ONLY way to God (e.g. John 14:6), as He is the ONLY sacrifice for our sins, the only way to be reconciled to God. When we recognise this, put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of ours sins, and repent and follow Him, then we are truly at peace with God. We are given the gift of eternal life. We are saved by grace through faith, and not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). One result is, that there is no more fear or anxiety about death and what lies beyond! (see Hebrews 2:14-15). This is how Sophany was able to embrace the thought of her impending death last year, and even look forward to it (“to die is gain” Phil 1:21).

These lessons that I am sharing (lessons from the Valley) apply to believers. So the real issue is to ensure that YOU are truly a disciple (follower) of Jesus Christ, and at peace with Him, as I just described above.

In Part 1 of this series, I began to look at the lessons which impacted me last year as Sophany went through her Cancer struggle, and which continue to impact me now, as I live life without the woman I greatly loved. Lesson 1 was that as believers, we will still go through trials and difficult circumstances in this life. We will now continue on with the lessons that have impacted me, and I pray will be an encouragement to you, in whatever trials and difficulties that you encounter.

I love this photo! This typified Sophany's outlook and mindset - praying to her Lord and Saviour, and listening to hymns on her ipad! Btw as it turned out, this photo was taken a mere 11 days before her faith became sight!!

Lesson 2 from the Valley: The Lord is WITH us in the Valley:

One of the most comforting things last year and continuing on now for myself, is that the Lord is with me. A reminder of Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me...” This is an amazing promise!! Whatever you are going through, whatever difficulty today and in the future, the Lord is WITH YOU! God, the all-powerful, all-knowing Creator of the Universe, is at the same time, our Father – He is with us, and cares and loves us (e.g. John 14:23). Although I am now without my beloved wife, I am not alone!! The Lord is with me!! And He is with you!! And as a result, we need not fear, as Psalm 23:4 says. He is in control of our lives.

Psalm 23:4 goes on to say that His rod and staff comforts us. A rod (used by shepherds) was a short, heavy club – used to ward off enemies, and to gently prod the sheep to go in the right direction. A staff was longer and thinner, with a hook at the end. This was used to gently, but firmly pull a sheep back into the fold, if prodding didn’t work. This all indicates that the Lord protects (nothing can happen to us that the Lord doesn’t allow or ordain), guides and leads us, because He is with us and loves us!! And He further promises that He will never leave us, nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). What great promises!! This certainly helped Sophany and I last year, and is of much comfort to myself now, as I live life now.

Lesson 3 from the Valley: The Lord Himself went through the Valley:

And the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, went through the Valley. He came to the Earth as God in the flesh, never sinned, yet endured great trials and difficulties in His human life. He was despised and rejected by man overall (see Isaiah 53:1-3 – Isaiah was written 700 years before Jesus came to the Earth). And He endured great suffering, pain and ridicule, when He was crucified on the Cross for our sins (Isaiah 52:14; 53:5-6). So Jesus, the Son of God, suffered and endured more than what we ever will. He can directly relate to what we go through, yet He was totally innocent and without sin. This again, should be of much comfort for us, as we can go to Him for grace and mercy:

Hebrews 4:14-16: “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Conclusion:

As we have begun to look at, the Bible gives us much comfort and hope in the midst of the trials and tribulations that we each go through in this life. As a believer, the Lord is with us. The more we appreciate this simple, but profound promise, the more it will impact our lives. The Lord Himself endured much suffering and hardship – which was all for you and I – as He came to be the sacrifice for our sins. And because Jesus rose from the dead, we can cry out to Him for grace and mercy. In the next part in this series, we will continue to look at practical lessons, which i pray will be a blessing and encouragement to you. Amen.

Isaiah 41:10“fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;I will strengthen you, I will help you,I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

  1. During the Pandemic a number of us felt that we could just manage with the pilot light within us, as we were unable to gather with other Christians in church where our lights are kept brightly burning. Fortunately God’s word never fails, and I am so happy that you have decided to write your thoughts down.
